Philome Obin (Haitian/Cap-Haitien, 1892-1986). Philome is a self-taught artist from Haiti. He is known as the founder of the Cap-Haitien school of art. His earliest work pre-date the Centre d'Art (Port-au-Prince), founded in 1944 by American Dewitt Peters. Philome Obin led his own art center of the north, where he mentored dozens of artists who many became masters in their own right. Philome is considered one of the foremost masters of 20th century Haitian painting. His work is widely collected, exhibited around the world, and part of the permanent collection of MoMA, New York.
